Beagle Breed Information

Original Function: Rabbit hound

Temperament: Alert, Inquisitive, Strong willed. Showing no aggression or timidity.

Characteristics: A merry hound whose essential function is to hunt, primarily hare, by following a scent. Bold, with great activity, stamina and determination. Alert, intelligent and of even temperament.

Recommended for: most people.

Lifespan: 10 to 15 years.

 

Height: 33-40cm (13"-16") Coat: Short, Dense & Weatherproof.

Colour: Tri-colour or Lemon & White are mostly seen. Any recognised hound colour other than liver. Tip of stern white

General Appearance: A sturdy, compactly-built hound. Hind legs should be well boned. Ears, broad & set to the side of the wide head. Eyes dark. Tail, must have a white tip & is carried up.

The Beagle is believed to have evolved from the old Talbot or Southern Hound in France. They made their way across the channel to Britain, were they were known as 'begles and used to hunt rabbit. The word 'beag' means small in Celtic or in French the word 'begueule' means gape throat.
They are alert and good tempered, they are rarely aggressive. They need firm handling but not harsh as they are strong willed and not that easy to train. They tend to wander if they smell some thing interesting, and its sometimes hard to get their attention to get them to come back. They crave company and love children.

Grooming- their short coat is easy to look after, a brush and a bath when needed.

Exercise- a good walk once a day and a play in the yard is the basic amount of exercise needed.

Health- Good breed but some can suffer from spinal problems, epilepsy, skin conditions and eye problems. They also have a tendency to become obese.
