French Bulldog Breed Information

Original Function: Companion

Temperament: Vivacious, deeply affectionate, intelligent.

Characteristics: Full of courage, yet with clown-like qualities. Bat ears and short undocked tail essential features of the breed.

Height: Approx. 30cm (12")

Ideal weight: Dogs 12.7 kg (28 lbs) Bitches 10.9 kg (24 lbs)

Colour: Brindle, fawn or pied.

Coat: Short, smooth & fine.

General Appearance: Sturdy, compact, solid, small dog with good bone, short, smooth coat. No point exaggerated, balance essential. Large domed head with short muzzle. Dark eyes & bat shaped ears. Tail is undocked and normally short.

The French Bulldog is believed to have evolved from the miniature British Bulldog, they were also once known as the Boule-Douge Francais. They were originally bred for companionship.

Frenchies make excellent pets for either apartments or homes, and they are comfortable as either city dogs or country dwellers. In any environment they have one overwhelming need, and that is to be in close contact with the person they love. They are highly intelligent and are never too boisterous or noisy. They can make great pets for the young and the mature person.

Grooming- the short coat is easy to look after. They can be groomed using a rubber-grooming mitt, which will remove loose and dead hair. The wrinkles on the face should be checked and kept clean.

Exercise- They do not require long walks, a few shorter ones every day will be enough. They should not be overly exercised in hot or warm weather as they can have difficulty breathing due to their short noses.
