Labrador Retriever Breed Information

Original Function: water retrieving

Characteristics: Good tempered, very agile, excellent nose, soft mouth; keen love of water, an adaptable and devoted companion.

Recommended for: Most people/families

Be Aware: If allowed can become obese quickly.

Lifespan: 10 - 12 yrs

 

Height: Dogs: 56- 57 cms (22 - 22.5 inches)

Height: Bitch:54.5 - 56 cms (21.5 - 22 inches)

Colour: Yellow, Black or Chocolate

Coat: Close, short and dense.

General Appearance:Strongly built, short coupled, very active, broad in skull; broad and deep through chest and ribs; broad and strong over loins and hindquarters with an otter tail

The Labrador Retriever originally comes from Newfoundland were fisherman used them on their boats to retrieve the fish. These days they are widely used as dogs for the blind and in police work. They are a fun loving, adaptable and have a very stable temperament; it is all these qualities that make them a very popular dog, in work situations and as the family pet. They are reliable, obedient and easy to train.

Grooming- the coat needs a regular brush, about once a week and a bath when necessary.

Exercise- Labrador pups do not need any formal exercise apart from play in the backyard or short walks of about 10 minutes for the first year of growth. As the Labrador breed has been known to be prone to OCD and hip dysplasia it is recommended that formal exercise for extended periods of time (over long distances eg. 2klms) not be done until the age of 12- 18 months of age, when full bone development has been reached.

Health- It is adviseable to purchase your puppy from a Breeder whose dogs have Hip and Elbow Xrays & current eye certificates, to lessen the likelihood of Hip and Elbow dysplasia, PRA & eye problems. For Diet and other general dog health information Health/Nutrition
