Standard Poodle Breed Information

Original Function: water retrieving, performer

Temperament: A very active, intelligent, well balanced and elegant looking dog with good temperament, carrying himself very proudly.

Recommended for: Most people/families, allergy suffers.

Lifespan: 10 - 14 yrs

 

Height: 38cm - 76cm (15"- 30")

Colour: All solid colours. White and cream poodles to have black nose, lips and eyerims, black toenails desirable, brown poodles to have dark amber eyes, dark liver nose, lips, eyerims and toenails. Apricot poodles to have dark eyes with black points or deep amber eyes with liver points. Black, silver and blue poodles to have black nose, lips, eyerims and toenails. Cream, apricot, brown, silver and blue poodles may show varying shades of the same colour up to 18 months. Clear colours preferred.

Coat: Very profuse and dense of good harsh texture without knots or tangles. All short hair close, thick and curly. It is strongly recommended that the traditional lion clip be adhered to. Pets: May be clipped in styles to suit your lifestyle or taste.

General Appearance: Large sized body. Dark eyes. Well coated long ears that hang down. Tail medium length.

TThe Standard Poodle is a gundog and originally used in France and Germany as a retriever of waterfowl. To help the dog in the water the hunters clipped off the coat around it's hindquarters, and left the cheat coat on for warmth, the coat around the leg joints was protection against injury. This is where the traditional clip comes from. They are a very intelligent dog and always ready for fun and play. They love to be apart of the family and thrive on the human company.

Grooming- bath regularly and clip every 6 to 8 weeks.

Exercise- love to go for walks and adore the water so swimming is another great form of exercise for them. Regular exercise is needed to keep them fit and happy.

Health- This breed can suffer from many genetic diseases, eye problem and skin problems. Check with breeders to see if tests have been done. Check ears regularly for infection and mites. For Diet and other general dog health information Health/Nutrition
