Scottish Terrier Breed Information

Original Function: vermin hunting

Temperament: Bold, but never aggressive.

Characteristics: Loyal and faithful. Dignified, independent and reserved, but courageous and highly intelligent.

Recommended for: Most people/families.

Be Aware: Some like to go wandering off if given the chance.

Lifespan: 11-13 years

 

Height: 25-28cm (10"-11")

Colour: Black, wheaten or brindle of any colour.

Coat: Harsh wiry outercoat & soft dense undercoat.

General Appearance: The long head has whiskers on the muzzle & eyebrows that cover the dark eyes. Ears are pointed & erect. Tail is long.
Thick-set, of suitable size to go to ground, which would preclude dogs of excessive body weight, Short-legged, alert in carriage and suggestive of great power and activity in small compass. Head gives the impression of being long for size of dog. Very agile and active in spite of short legs.

The Scottish Terrier hails from Aberdeen and was developed about 100 or so year ago. The farmers used them to keep the vermin numbers down. They also worked with fox hunters, the hounds would trail the foxes and then the terriers would keenly follow them down into their burrows and dig to get to the foxes. Their tail needed to be strong so the hunters could pull them out of the burrow.
They are a happy, lovably companion and do tend to bark at anything that takes their attention, this makes them a good watchdog. They are known to be a bit stubborn so firm but not harsh handling from a young age is recommended.

Grooming- regular brushing is needed and they should be clipped or trimmed twice a year to keep the coat neat and knot free. Bath when necessary or dry shampoo.

Exercise- in a good sized yard these guys will run around and exercise themselves but also love to go for walks and have play times with you.

Health- This breed has sensitive skin and cannot tolerate fleas and may result in skin problems.
