Welsh Terrier Breed Information

Original Function: Otter, fox, badger, and rat hunting

Temperament: Happy and volatile rarely of shy nature. Game and fearless but definitely not aggressive although at all times able to hold his own when necessary.

Characteristics: Affectionate, obedient and easily controlled.

Recommended for: Most people/families

Lifespan: 12-14 years

 

Height: not exceeding 39 cms (15½ ins) at shoulders

Weight: 9 - 9.5 kg (20-21 lbs)

Colour: Black & tan for preference, or black grizzle & tan.

Coat: Wiry, hard, very close and abundant.

General Appearance: Medium sized body. Small dark eyes, V shaped ears are semi erect. Strong well boned legs. Smart, workmanlike, well-balanced and compact.

The Welsh Terrier was used by the Welsh people as hunting dogs to hunt otters, badgers and foxes. Their smaller size also make them useful keeping the farms and stables free of rats and other vermin. They never became too popular though as the hunters preferred dogs will white on them, as they were more visible in the fields.
They are an affectionate dog which is intelligent and easily trained. They make great company and enjoy working or doing things for you

Grooming- the coat can be clipped several times a year to keep it looking neat and tidy. Bath when needed.

Exercise- Regular exercise is required, daily walks on lead
