Yorkshire Terrier Breed Information

Original Function: small ratters then companions

Lifespan: 8-17 years, sometimes even longer. (refer to Health below)

Weight: up to 7 pound or 3.2kg

Colour: Dark steel blue (not silver blue), extending from occiput to root of tail, never mingled with fawn, bronze or dark hairs. Hair on chest rich, bright tan. All tan hair darker at the roots than in middle, shading to still lighter at tips.

Coat: Hair on body moderately long, perfectly straight (not wavy), glossy; fine silky texture, not woolly. Fall on head long, rich golden tan, deeper in colour at sides of head, about ear roots and on muzzle where it should be very long. Tan on head not to extend on to neck, nor must any sooty or dark hair intermingle with any of tan.

General Appearance: Small sized body. Head is covered with coat, which is sometimes tied back out of the dark almond shaped eyes. Ears are erect & pointed. General outline conveying impression of vigorous and well-proportioned body.

The Yorkshire Terrier is made up of a variety of different terriers, such as the English, Scottish and the Maltese. They were used as ratters and were very good at their job. They are often mistaken as a lap dog, but they retain the terrier character and are lively, energetic and have a spirited temperament.
They make wonderful family pets but do not always suit families with very young children and the elderly. They are an alert dog, which makes them an excellent watchdog, and despite their size they will defend their territory.

Grooming- daily brushing is needed to keep the long coat looking good and tangle free. They can be clipped to make the coat less maintenance, wash when needed.

Exercise- they love to run around and have play sessions with you, regular walking will also keep the fit and happy.

Health- What can make a big difference in the length of time they live, is careful attention to the teeth. Bad teeth can result in heart disease, and this applies to all breeds.
Yorkies should be encouraged to chew RAW bones, brisket bones, shank bones, chicken necks, etc. But must always be RAW, never cooked.
